Chapter 6
I really didn’t know what the hell was happened to me about this.
For some reason, my emotion and my logic sense had failed to coincide this time (well, as the matter of fact it happened quite a lot lately. Now that was a bit of a worry). They refused to talk to each other, each of them shouted at me with their own idea.
“OYEEEE! There is something going on with Kate. She is a bloody cow!!” This was my Emotion.
“No No No! Calm down! Young lady. You’ve just talked to her, there is nothing wrong with her!” My Logic seemed losing its ground slightly, shouted with weakening voice.
I waved my hands around, signalled them to be quiet.
All these shouting could only made me more confused.
What was wrong with Kate? She seemes like a jolly decent girl and was terribly pretty. We only knew each other like, less then five minutes, and why on earth I felt deeply disturbing about? Was I really fancy Alex, so the appearance of Kate actually made me jealous? I didn’t think so. Alright Alright! Every woman in the hospital fancied him. But I believed we all fancied him like we all fancied some famous gorgeously looking celebrity, or...maybe he made us all have some kind of mirage that we fancied him. All the end of the day, I honestly wouldn’t reckon we would all get jealous about Kate finally entered the scene and she was nice looking. Besides, he was my patient too for god’s sake. Me fancied my own patients? This was very unwise and bloody insane.
No, I didn’t think I fancied Alex at all.
I did like Alex, to be quite frankly with you.
I would be a lying cow if I said I didn’t. He was so amazingly gorgeous and decent.
But my heart still went to Carl at this point and time.
No, Carl and I were truly finished. But I was still at this in-between stage, you knew, adjusting my feeling to Carl from lovers to friends. Which was quite tricky since I had never been a believer of ‘friends after break up’ philosophy. I simply couldn’t understand how people could manage doing that, either. But Carl was very special to me and I was willing to give it a try this time. I’ve made some progresses so far. Well, I hardly ever cry these days and I could met Carl and Daphne in person (so far I could only managed to talk to them on the phone) when I was ready. There was still another half way and I wasn’t prepared to open up for anybody else just yet.
You’ve got to properly close this chapter in order to get ready to open another one. If you knew what I mean.
I decided to put this disturbance felling into the little recycling bin marked’ Alex’ somewhere in my mind, locked it away and ignored it completely at this point and time.
I got other things to worry about.
Like nosy Zoë.
Like my final exam.
Arahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the exam.
I really had to find some time to study this holiday if I didn’t want to fail my paper this semester. I seriously found it was hard to achieve with a patient to constant monitor. I glanced at my bag. There were at least three very thick text books in there, as well as several lecture notes.
“ Lord help me!” I signed.
Well I actually needed Lord helping me lots of thing. But at the moment I would be okay for just this one.
The ‘Home Coming Party’ lasted till way past midnight. Everyone seemed having a good time. I didn’t think there was anyone who was not leaving the party drunk or laughing. Either New Zealand Kiwis were truly keen party people, they tended to find all sorts of excuses to party (still deeply amazed me even after all these years); or those people were happy to see Alex again after all these months. A couple of guests decided to stay overnight, so we had to sorting out the limited guest bedrooms. This took another hour and a half (Nigel was too drunk to move upstairs, so his family had to sleep in the one downstairs; Kate originally insisted sleep with Alex, but Alex refused due to the massive quantities of equipments surrendered his bed…do you want me to keep going? I could go on and on for this) By the time everything was settle (I had to set up a bed and slept next to Alex for a night, far out! Those Alex fan in the hospital would kill me if they knew what happened!!), it was already way past three o’clock and I could see the sky outside starting to turn bright.
“Did you have a good evening?” Alex asked while I was connecting him to those monitoring machine before bed.
I nodded: “This was the first time I actually see a western family has this many relatives!”
Alex laughed lightly: “Well, my father was originally from Greece.”
“Really? Does Greek normally have a big family, too?” I raised my eyebrow.
“To my father, yes. There are total of 6 brothers and sisters in his family. Today you only met about three of them.”
“Far out.”
Alex smiled. I noticed that there was a tiny dimple on the left corner of his mouth.
How could a man still looked this gorgeous this time of the day?
“No offence. Before today I thought my mother’s family is big.”
“Really? Where about are you from?”
“Australia. But my mother is from Japan.”
“Oh, the massive reproducing Asian?”
“ Exactly.” I laugh a little: “Luckily I haven’t seen them that often. I’ve been having a hard time remember their name.”
“ They all looked the same, aren’t they?” He laughed, leaned back and sank his head deep into the pillow, looked all relaxed and content.
“Shit yeah. I was only three when my mum first took me to one of those gathering occasion. Goodness me! That scared the hell out of me! Do you know I had nightmare for about 3 days afterwards? They looked just like clones and yaking in some kinds of foreign language I had no idea what that was, well, I later learned that it was Japanese but in different accent!! For some reason, they all obsessed with squeezing my cheek and said to my mum ‘ Kawayii!!!’, which means ‘she is so cute’. My cheek nearly twice the size it supposed to be at the end of the gathering.”
This had Alex in stiches.
“Can’t you speak Japanese?” He asked.
“With a very weird accent. But I understand them alright. I only speak to my mum in Japanese these days.”
“That’s good enough. I can only speak English.”
“I thought you are Greek.” I smiled.
“My father is the second-generation Greek immigrant.”
“Oh.”
A few second pause.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Do you have a good evening?” I looked at him.
“Better then I thought actually.”
“Yeah, you initially thought they all come to see what a joke you are.”
“ Yeah, it turned out they were just here for the beer.” He winked.
This had me in stiches this time.
‘He is actually quite funny, too!’ I thought with astonishment. Nice looking… no, gorgeously looking, funny and kind, you didn’t find those qualities in one person a lot these days.
I checked his blood pressure and started noted them down. It began to get quite difficult because my eyes started having problems to stay open. There were a couple of times I couldn’t even hold the pen straight.
I’d better finished this quick.
Alex suddenly looked at me all seriously.
“Isabella.”
“Yeah?”
What happened next made me nearly dropped the note pad off the floor: “Are you with someone at the moment?”
“PARDON?” I looked at him with disbelieve. Great! Now all my sleepy bugs were gone.
“You heard me.” He threw me meaningful smile.
“Why do you want to know?” I looked at him with suspicion.
“Why not?” His smiled deepen: “Just wondering.”
“Why do you want to wonder something like that?” I stared at him: “You’ve got a girlfriend.”
“Well, is there any law forbid me asking you these kind of question while I am with someone?” Alex looked slightly amused: “Come on. Are you with someone at the moment?”
I stared at him in silence for a while: “…………..No, not anymore.”
“Not anymore? Is that means you were with someone before?” Now he acted like a paparazzi. I felt slightly annoyed.
“Can I not talk about this?”
“Am I annoying you?” Alex stared at me for a while and asked.
“A bit.”
“Sorry.” He apologised.
I finished what I was supposed to do and get ready to go to the stretched bed next to Alex’s. Alex kept flashing little look at me.
“Isabella.” Just when I turned the light off, lied in bed and almost felt asleep, Alex’s voice suddenly appeared in the dark.
“Yeah?”
“I think that guy must be blind.”
Now the hope of actually having some decent sleep tonight was complete gone out of the window.
